Anya Smirnova is a third year Phd student at the Courtauld Institute of Art and Tate. Her Phd research focuses on Internet and new media art practices that developed in the context of post-socialist transitions and is co-supervised by Dr Klara Kemp-Welch (The Courtauld) and Juliet Bingham (Curator of International Art, Tate). Taking a thematic and topographical approach, her thesis zooms in on specific exhibitions, festivals, conferences and events, and investigates how networks developed across national and regional borders, while grounding the practices associated with new media in their local contexts. Alongside her PhD studies, Anya is a Curatorial and Editorial Assistant at the Jencks Foundation in London, and works on independent curatorial projects. Previously Anya has taught at the Courtauld, and was an Associate Editor of Immediations, the Courtauld’s peer-reviewed journal for post-graduate research. Her research has been published in Kajet journal and the Journal of Curatorial Studies.
